I've been using my building's ISP the past week as some of you have noticed, with my ping now comfortably under 40ms.

The ISP is Redbutton, offering a Wi-Fi service to hotels and restaurants in the Cape Town CBD. They are quite expensive (around 15c a MB which equates to R300/2GB) but I am in the process of trying to negotiate better terms since the only reason I use the internet is to play Quake.

I was sceptical initially given that I heard the Wi-Fi technology is not conducive to gaming but so far non of my opponents have complained about my connection as they generally do when I am at home or using the cellC stick.

Although my ping has improved significantly from around 90ms to around 40ms I can't say there is a marked improvement in my gameplay. The results I had against opponents with the higher ping I still get with the lower ping, my accucracy figures also look more or less the same.

I will use this connection until my quota runs out and then hope they agree to lower their rates to make it more attractive.

I noticed and have to say its now quite a pleasure to play with you.

The general public have a lot of misconceptions about wireless, thinking that if it's wireless, your latency will be poor. Simply not true.

Wireless and especially fixed line-of-sight wireless technologies are extremely robust and resilient. Non line of sight and roaming/mobile access causes problems due to over contention and no means to control it (like any GSM internet access).

Its the "radio resources" tower-side that causes the problem. If there aren't any "channels" available, you "wait for a channel" and this causes lagg spikes, jitter, etc.

Ok, enough blabbing. Glad to see you have reliable internet to play QL.

40ms versus 90ms

Postby saturnz » 10 Oct 2011, 11:24

For two months I was playing with the WiFi connection, with a very stable ping of around 35ms.

The gaming experience was quite pleasant, my movement improved and I sensed my overall gameplay improved as well, which is contrary to what I initially said in this thread.

I recently had to revert back to the cellC stick, with my ping shooting back up to around 90ms. At first it was very difficult to adjust, and I often blamed my poor form on my higher ping. However I have recently started to get similiar results on the higher ping compared to the 40ms.

The major difference though is the accucracy of the LG and RG. I was getting some really interesting shots with the RG and I was bit more confident in using the LG with a lower MS.
