Part 1 here

onto the next topic.. :)

Feel free to talk about it anytime with me. :)
There area lot of details I can't disclose, but I'm more than welcome to have the conversations.

M4nimal
server admins - is this at all possible in SA, ie: to have a "responsible" person take care of server setups and the like

SyncError
I don't understand, isn't that every Pro user in SA?

M4nimal
I mean from a server side pov, is it possible to get a permanent server for QL runing in cape town for example
all our servers are JHB

SyncError
Well, I don't think we can currently afford a second server in South Africa. There aren't enough subscriptions there to support one.
If someone working with a GSP in Cape Town were to donate a server though, we'd gladly get it setup.

M4nimal
we can provide a server, we have resources here..

SyncError
We do this in many areas requesting servers.
We're just at the end of our budget when it comes to server locations.

M4nimal
ok I understand
do you need specific server specs?

SyncError
I'm sending them to you now.

Hi Mark,

Quake Live servers require a dedicated server with a dual or quad core processor, at least 4GB of RAM, and running Debian Linux, SSH, and a public IP address. Very little hard drive space is needed, any drive 120GB or larger is more than sufficient. We cannot run on VMs due to performance issues we’ve had in the past.

Once a server with the appropriate specs has been setup, we only need the ip address and SSH root access to setup the server.

Sincerely,

one comment I'm reading here that people are asking about is:
from peterp00n: sup guys, can anyone tell me who is admin of the ZA QL servers?
from fragtion: iD themselves. Apart from them, the hardware is hosted & managed by Kradenko from IS-Gaming. Dont think we have any local referees

SyncError
No, there are no such things as local admins in any region.

M4nimal
not sure why they would need to log into the server itself.. this help understand what the IT geeks want?

SyncError
The model is that local game servers are utilized for both public infrastructure and pro Start-a-Match servers.
Public servers aren't heavily regulated, users report issues to Customer Support.
Start-a-Match servers should have the server owner there to admin the server, kick players, etc.

M4nimal
that would be the player with the pro account?

SyncError
We let the community self-regulate by giving the server owner a lot of tools to control things, and op refs.
/me nods
And anyone they op on their server.
But no regions have dedicated local admins.
Nor should they really need them.

M4nimal
ok maybe thats it.. we in SA dont have a referee? or OP?

SyncError
You're a Pro user.
If you launch a server you are responsible for that server.
You are the local ref. :)

M4nimal
ok
so no such thing as an SA nation-wide ref?

SyncError
If people don't like that user, or think they are being a poor admin, then players shouldn't play on that persons server.
Correct, no such thing in any region in the world.

M4nimal
ok gotcha
I'll let the guys know
thanks so much for speaking to me
