Dreamhack 2011

Postby Cyrus » 04 Feb 2011, 00:47

Hi guys. We have finalized a sponsor who signed off to send a single player to Dreamhack. We are still negotiating to increase that number, but 1 single player is finalized, in which case it will be Quake Live, should we get enough players.

We have held Dreamhack Qualifiers at rAge 2008 for CoD4 and Rage 2009 and 2010 for Quake Live and we will do it again this year. This time, however, things will work a bit different.

We will have it as a VIP event with only the top players qualifying for rAge (and other LANs throughout the year). In order to qualify for these lans, players should enter the league which will start on 8 February, which is around the corner. So far we only have 2 players from Quake Live entering, as opposed to the multi digits from other games.

In South Africa there are only about 256 quake live registered players at the moment ! Tenth ranked 3rd, stc 10th fragaholik 11th and me 13th are the current rankings. I dropped down from 12th after frag came up to 11th a few nights ago. the ranking site is for duelers. www.qlranks.com and is updated once a day it seems. Winning gives points so the more points u earn the higher ur ranks. And losing minuses the points. Time to start taking our 1 on 1's more seriously and make xTc the top clan in SA for quake.

those ratings seem a bit inconsistent, the SA ones atleast

although its interesting to see my rating improve in line with the better connection I had for two months (40ms), and then drop as I tried to become accustomed to a much higher ping (90ms) and then recover to the high I had with the low ping.

The ratings are basically changing all the time.... IF u lose a game to sum 1 lower rated then u u get minus almost 20 elo but then if u beat that person again u only get about plus 8... if u beat sum 1 higher rated then u tho u will get plus 18 or so.... basically if u make more points then u loose consistently u will get rated higher

I am very familiar with the ELO rating system since its a system used by chess players of which I am one (rating high of 2056 on freechess.org) so I know how it works.

However in saying that, I do not see deanix? and raijin, conc3pt, madcow and gl1tch are all significantly stronger than me.

I suppose the rating pool is small though which makes it volative.

Yeah looks like it. Smurfing also messes with rating a lot.

today i lost to a smurf after playing 5 games a row and winning them all. When i checked ql ranks. The smurf i lost to had minuses 30 ELO from me which cancelled all 5 wins

well the smurf is then supposed to have a higher rating than you and should be reflected in the ranking system, which is why I think the system is currently flawed.

If you subscribe to the view that you can only improve to a certain level after which it becomes very difficult to improve further, then your rating is actually supposed to reach a maximum level and then remain there unless a significant amount of constructive effort is put in to improve.

My chess rating reached a maximum level of just over 2000 a few years ago and has remained within the 1900-2000 band since then. However if I was to get a chess coach and actively pursue improving my game I would expect it to increase. However just normal play should see my rating remain within that band. This is how the ELO system works.

So unless you are being actively coached, or double the amount of smart training don't expect your rating to shoot up 200 or 300 points. Basically if you want your rating to be higher, you need to beat people with a higher rating than you on a consistent basis.
